8.) Museum of International Contemporary Art – Arrecife

The Museum of International Contemporary Art may seem small but it houses a top-notch collection of contemporary paintings and sculptures by top artists. All these exhibits are located in a magnificently renovated 18th-century castle. This castle is known as the Castillo de San José. This castle is situated on the outskirts of Arrecife.

The Castillo was actually built to avoid pirates and reduce poverty on the island. This poverty was caused due to the major volcanic eruptions in the 1730s. As a result, it was locally known as the Fortress of Hunger. At present as well Castillo houses a stylish restaurant. It is designed by great César Manrique.

9.) The Jameos Del Agua

The Jameos del Agua is unquestionably the most inspiring creation by the César Manrique. It was the Centre of Art, Culture and Tourism. It reflects one of the keystone of his creative work, i.e. harmony between nature and artistic creation. The Jameos del Agua is located inside the volcanic tunnel formed due to the eruption of La Corona Volcano. It is among the longest in the world, about 6 km in length. It was also described as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ in one of the films of legend Rita Heyworth.

10.) The Green Caves – Cuevas de los Verdes

Cueva de los Verdes are the part of same collapsed lava tunnel which forms the Jameos del Agua. It is a 6 km long volcanic tube that was formed around 5,000 years ago due to the eruption of the nearby volcano Monte Corona. This 2 km long underground passageway has been amazingly lit. It houses one of the Lanzarote’s best-kept secrets.
